Rose Creek Public Library needs your books – and not just the ones that are overdue to be returned.

The library in Towne Lake is to benefit from a book sale sponsored by the Cherokee chapter of the Greater Atlanta Homebuilders Association, but stocks of donated books are low.

Chapter members and the Sequoyah Regional Library System are asking residents to donate gently-used books and magazines of all kinds to be sold at the event later this month. Proceeds will be used to buy new books for the branch.

Rose Creek was threatened last year with a possible closing after county library board members voted it was the only way to stretch their underfunded budget.

While the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners and city councils of Canton and Woodstock all increased their funding and prevented a closing, more money is needed to keep the system out of a similar situation this winter.

The homebuilders late last year formed an “alliance” with the library system, becoming the first business to participate in the new program. Alliances for Libraries partnerships allow businesses to donate funding, goods and services to the library system.

Donations of books and magazines for the benefit sale can be dropped off at Rose Creek Public Library, R.T. Jones Memorial Library in Canton, Towne Lake Realty Inc. and the Falls of Cherokee Sales office.

The event is being organized by chapter executive committee members Renee McKenzie of TIH Homes and Tracey Quillen of Flag Bank.

“We thought it was a great idea to save the library,” said chapter President Steve McKenzie of Towne Lake, owner of TIH Homes Inc. He is the husband of Renee’ McKenzie, chapter executive committee member of Greater Atlanta Homebuilders Association. “We thought the sale would be something beneficial to the community.”

The sale is from 10am through 4pm Friday, March 23, and Saturday, March 24, at the library on Towne Lake Parkway at Rose Creek Drive. Concessions and T-shirts will be for sale and there will be entertainment.

Outback Steakhouse of Roswell, Kroger and Publix also are sponsors for the event.

“They’ve worked so hard getting this together,” branch Manager Sally Burton said of the chapter members. “People really do appreciate this library and it really is wonderful they’re doing this.”

The chapter also has donated the proceeds from their holiday raffle to the library.

“Our partnership with the library will continue,” McKenzie said. “It’s more than just this book sale.”
